Today I am starting a 40 day challenge. If you’re reading this, feel free to join in the challenge with me. It doesn’t matter if you are starting after the fact, as long as you get into the spirit of what the challenge represents.

The 40 Day Challenge

As of November 22, it is about 40 days before January 1. What I am committing to is to diligently pray about at least three things that I would like to see happen in 2014. But I’m not only going to pray about it. I’m also going to commit to taking a serious step toward doing them every single day over the next 40 days. Lastly, I’m going to do what I can to remove any obstacle that I can that keeps me from accomplishing what I need to accomplish.

The Number 40

I can’t say for sure where the idea came from. I CAN say that 40 is representative of a number of thingsCharles Harper's 40 Day Challenge in the Bible. Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. Noah was in the ark with his family 40 days and 40 nights. I you get the idea. Of course, it is voluntary. There is nothing in the Bible that says that God is obligated to do anything. I think overall the number represents the washing away of death, transitions and new beginnings.

How the Challenge Will Go

If anything, it’s a way for me to do a better job of honoring him in some areas that I would like to be more consistent. So here are my three things that I’m going to commit to for the next 40 days. It is fair to warn you that I do have a list that I’m keeping between myself and the Lord. Some of those things I’ll just keep in an envelope, sealed and I will open them on January 1.

First, I want to make sure that the four of us are having family devotions every single day.

Second, I want to make sure that Laurel and I are spending time praying together every single day.

Third, since I think that we’re supposed to be doing this together, I’m going to make sure that I write to this blog every single day. We have all stated that we think that it is part of our calling together. However, I have not led the way. I have though just, and pontificated about how we should be doing it.

Making Things Right

Another part of the challenge is to make right the things that are out of line. Personal relationships that are sideways, business dealings that are not what I want them to be. I am going to straighten them o to the very best of my ability.

There are a number of things that I would like to see happen in our lives. But these are things that I certainly hope will benefit us. So in this day 40. I will write again. Obviously, one day, 39 and talk about the challenge some more. And I guess, at some level. I’ll be talking about the challenge to meet the challenge.

I’ve asked for my family to keep my accountable to my public list. I may ask some trusted brothers to keep me accountable to my Private list.

Join me. I hope to make this an annual occurrence.
